What is Japanese Encephalitis?

Japanese B Encephalitis (JBE) is a serious brain infection (Encephalitis) caused by a virus.

The virus is transmitted by the mosquito.

The pig is the main reservoir.

Wading Birds are also an important reservoir of infection.

As you can imagine, The disease is most common in rural areas at wet times of year.

Most people exposed to the virus have no symptoms at all. Around 1 in 200 of those infected develop encephalitis. Around 20-30% of people with JBE die, and 40% of Survivors will commonly live with long term disability. There is no specific antiviral treatment for Japanese Encephalitis.

Japanese Encephalitis may rarely cause a fatal brain infection.
