What is Japanese Encephalitis?

Japanese B Encephalitis (JBE) is a serious brain infection (Encephalitis) caused by a virus.

As you can imagine, The disease is most common in rural areas at wet times of year.

Most people exposed to the virus have no symptoms at all. Around 1 in 200 of those infected develop encephalitis. Around a third of people with JBE die. Survivors will commonly live with long term disability.

Japanese Encephalitis may rarely cause a fatal brain infection.
